A Study on the Effect of a Group Art Therapy for Improving the Life Quality of Female Victims of Domestic Violence

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of group art therapy in the quality of life of women who have previously victims of domestic violence. The subjects of this study were four women who had been victimized by domestic violence. They participated in ten out twelve sessions of group art therapy program. The group art therapy program ran twelve sessions, twice a week. Each session lasted 90minutes. The assessment tool that used in this study was the scale of the quality of victim¡¯s life of domestic violence as suggested by the Ministry of Gender Equity and Family(2012). The questionnaire was conducted before and after the group art therapy program. In addition, K-HTP test(a picture test of kinetic home, trees, people) was conducted, compared, and analyzed before and after the program. The results of this study are as follows: First, according to sub-categories on the scales for Quality of Life Questionnaire after group art therapy, positive changes were found in the participants' self-esteem, communication, post-traumatic stress and helplessness. Second, comparison with pre to post changes of the projected figure K-HTP test suggested that positive changes were found in all areas in terms of their quality of life, since clients recognized themselves as main agent of their lives. In conclusion, close-monitoring of women victims' psychological change after group art therapy suggested that clients could manage their lives through their own free will. At the same time, they showed positive changes in self-esteem, communication, post-traumatic stress and helplessness by developing emotional stability.
